Vietnam Railway - known to many also as the Reunification Railway, was progressively built over from 1899 to 1936 during the French Colonial Rule.  Life along the railway used to belong to those who worked during the construction, and later of those who are employees of the railway.  These days, they are used by merchants during the day as workshops and only a handful are used as residences.
